American Society of Civil Engineers Hawaii Green Project of the Year Award

Oceanit was awarded the American Society of Civil Engineers Hawaii’s 2013 Green Project of the Year for its Kawainui Restoration Project work in Kailua, Hawaii. Through a partnership with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Hawaii Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Forestry and Wildlife, Oceanit planned, designed, and prepared contract documents to rebuild a natural bird sanctuary at Kawainui Marsh using innovative engineering design technologies.

The purpose of the project was to build a system of artificial ponds to create a habitat to benefit four of Hawaii’s endangered water birds without reducing the current flood storage capacity provided by the marsh. The Kawainui Marsh project transformed the deteriorating, nonfunctional portion of a wetland into a bird sanctuary within an engineered flood-control system.
