Each year, Pacific Business News honors 40 of Hawaii’s outstanding entrepreneurs and business leaders by naming their 40 Under 40 Awards list. The honorees for 2018 are recognized at PBN’s awards event at the Sheraton Waikiki on June 8th.

This year, Oceanit’s own Dr. Michael (Mike) Foley was selected to be honored for his business excellence and community dedication, leading efforts to successfully integrate sustainability & resilience into practical coastal engineering solutions for both public and private clients.

Mike is a leader on Oceanit’s Resilient Sustainable Engineering (RiSE) team, orchestrating projects with diverse technical experts to produce innovative solutions that interweave usability and aesthetics with practical solutions for Hawai’i. He has designed artificial reef systems to provide coastal protection and promote coral reef habitats that benefit the public and Hawaii’s visitor industry.

He has also been a key contributor to understanding issues and identifying solutions for beach erosion and sand depletion. Particularly on Hawaii’s beaches such as Waikiki and other scenic shorelines, erosion is becoming a critical issue and Dr. Foley is one of the state’s leading experts.

Born and raised on the Island of Maui, Mike has a deep love for the ocean and is an avid surfer and a volunteer at the Surfrider Foundation.  Mike serves on the Board of Directors for the Hawaii Shore and Beach Preservation Association (HSBPA) to support the organization with his understanding of the physics, beauty, and behavior of the ocean and coastal environments.

Dr. Foley obtained his Ph.D. from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, specializing in the application of submerged breakwaters (artificial reefs) that provide coastal and harbor protection while simultaneously providing ecological and recreational value as coral reef habitat and surf breaks.

Mike is a practitioner of sustainability and leads Oceanit staff in the firm’s ‘Green Team’ actions; installing ecofriendly solutions and initiatives for composting, recycling, aquaponics garden, and coordinating the purchase & use of reusable/recyclable items. Dr. Foley is the epitome of the new generation of leader that has demonstrated business excellence in fostering successful business in sustainable engineering and environmental resilience.

Congratulations to Oceanit’s Dr. Michael Foley for being named as one of Pacific Business News’ 40 Under 40 for 2018!
